I took a CPR class recently, and the instructor was a trainer for a paramedic program here in Portland, and a paddler. She was emphatic about always using a barrier. I can certainly understand that emphasis, based on a professional paramedic's point of view, but can foresee situations when you'd want to ignore the rule. It would be very tough to let someone go, when you felt like you could have helped. I grabbed one of those masks and stuck it in my wallet.
