I've not had the problems you describe with trad. rectangular tarps, if I
understand the use you have made of them.  If the narrow end of your
trapezoidal design goes close to ground, then I'd put the pole reinforcement
closer to the longer leg of the trapezoid than your ASCII drawing shows.

Re:  doubling:  sounds good to me.

The reason I've been happy with rectangular tarps is that I use the "wings"
you want to discard to shut off side-drafts and drips.  The areas protected by
the "wings" end up as places to store gear, since they are usually too low to
the ground for people to sit under.
