I was out there for a bit but with the lights of DC to the south and the fact that the folks behind us, to the north, have about 300 watts of light going all the time, I was a bit disinclined to stay out in the cold by myself. I did see one shooting star. I thought that was good, considering. If I'd seen more with the binoculars I was going to head to the university observatory that is about 10 minutes from our house. I hope someone else had a better show than we did in NJ. Debbie Reeves Sandy Hook, NJ >> It was disappointing for me, too. I read that Europe and the Middle East had a great show -- up to 1688 meteors per hour at the peak. The shower peaked about 8:15 p.m. CST, pretty much as predicted. I was a bit late to my own rendezvous, but looked for them from about 8:00 p.m. till about 10:30 p.m. CST, and saw not a single Leonid, though I did see three others. I had hoped that even though Leo was below the horizon, I would see at least some of the brighter ones, but the report at http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/ast18nov99_1.htm says there were few bright Leonids even over Europe, just bunches of dim ones. Where I was, high, thin, cirrus clouds and a bright moon made seeing any faint meteors virtually impossible. Still, it was a nice evening to lie out on my Thermarest and chat with other kayakers, and it gave me an opportunity to reacquaint myself with some of the constellations. The starry sky, the air moving gently over my face, all made me regret how long it has been since I last slept under the stars.
