This was not a dedicated surf session. I usually go through the surf line
twice. Once to get out and once when I'm returning.

The rudder really was necessary (or at least very helpful). The wind was
blowing at 35-40 knots with wind waves of 6 feet and a swell of 11 feet
according to the Coast Guard who gave current conditions on the VHF just
before we got back to the beach.

My paddling companion was in a rudderless boat and he paddled the entire day
leaned on to one edge. I found it was much easier to just kick in some right
rudder and that kept me from constantly turning into the wind.

In spite of my wet landing, it was a great paddling day--65 degree air temp
and very sunny with a water temp of 59.
