Hello Fellow Paddle Wisers, Well I am an ACA Instructor an I can say that I do not like the name of the head dink. I also can say that it is very important to use one while rolling a sea kayak in the C to C position. The term C to C also indicates the position of ones head at the end of the roll. The J lean stands for someone using body english to edge their layak while keeping their torso perpendicular to the water, and if you lay your head on the shoulder of the side you just rolled up from you then have the letter C being formed by your boat, body, and head. I have found that some students have a bad habit of letting their head start the roll by lifting their head out of the water first. This causes them to focus on their arms too much and really weakens their hip snap/leg lift. When a student finally uses a head dink and lays their head on the shoulder that is coming out of the water last they comment that the roll was much easier. I am obtaining my ACA Endorsement to teach sea kayak rolling this coming May in Duluth Minnesota with Gail Green and Randy Carlson. To get your endorsement you have to be an ACA instructor and be able to teach students to roll as well as being able to roll your own boat with multiple rolling styles on each side of your kayak.
