The Chesapeake Paddlers Association Presents

Y2KOLD! - A Cold Water Paddling Workshop

Come learn the risks, challenges and pleasures of cold water paddling
from a variety of experts and experienced paddlers!

Get an overview of sea kayaking in cold weather, provided by Chuck
Sutherland - an acknowledged expert in cold weather paddling. Discuss
how to minimize risks with experienced paddlers who have extended their
paddling seasons. Examine and learn about a variety of cold weather and
safety gear designed to provide maximum paddling comfort. After lunch,
there will be opportunities for those with cold water gear to try out
their rolls, wet exits, and self and group rescues in a controlled but
realistic (and cold!) environment.

Any sea kayaker who wants to learn more about cold weather paddling is
welcome! From the novice paddler to the warm-weather paddler who'd like
to lengthen his or her paddling season, from the intermediate paddler
who is hesitant about their skills in cold water to the experienced
paddler who wishes to hone those skills - all will find something to
learn.

For those whose interest is academic, or who do not have cold weather
gear yet, bring only your enthusiasm and warm clothes to cheer on the
cold-water paddlers. Those paddlers with appropriate gear can try out
their equipment and skills with experienced cold water paddlers acting
as spotters, and for experienced cold water paddlers who want to sharpen
their skills and share experiences. To play in the water, please bring
a kayak (with bulkheads or float bags), sprayskirt, PFD and appropriate
cold water clothing including wet or dry suit, hand head and foot
protection (neoprene or equivalent). Changing rooms (without showers)
will be available, so be sure to bring a change of warm clothes and a
towel!

In addition to a great learning experience, whether or not you elect to
swim - you'll enjoy the camaraderie
of other winter paddlers, and you'll take home information and a set of
handouts which will give you a new perspective on an extended paddling
season. A hot lunch will be provided as part of the program, and hot
drinks will be available throughout the day.
