Hey, Mad Poodle, I need help replying to these crazy northerners who
camp
outside when it snows!
>>

Here are a few advantages of winter wilderness camping:

1. There is little competition for campsites.
2. There are no mosquitoes or other noxious insects.
3. The bears are sleeping in their dens, so you don't have to hang your
food.
4. You can bring frozen food without worrying about it thawing -- French
silk pie, for instance.
5. You don't have to wash your dishes -- just scrub them out with snow.
6. There is plenty of clean, fresh water around you -- you only have to
thaw it.
7. You can get by with a tarp instead of a tent, at least, in the woods.
8. You can tow your pack on a sled instead of carrying it.
9. You can go places on skis or snowshoes that you can't in summer, such
as marshes and swamps.
10. Animal tracks are easier to see -- on one winter trip in the BWCA, I
saw hare, bobcat, otter, deer, and wolf tracks all on the same day.
11. Snow-covered terrain is beautiful.
