I have been lucky enough to have received instruction in rolling from some of the best, and, with the upcoming pool sessions in Philadelphia, I have been corralled into teaching rolling skills. Though I can't ever hope to be as fine as these more experienced instructors, I am determined to do the best that I am able. I know that there are many here on the list that have a lot of experience in teaching rolling and was hoping for advice to increase my arsenal of information. -- : : Gabriel L Romeu : http://studiofurniture.com furniture from the workshop : http://members.xoom.com/gabrielR life as a tourist, daily journal : http://users.aol.com/romeugp paintings, photographs, etchings, objects *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

Since this is my first time teaching, I can tell you from the recipient side. My initial problem learning to roll on my first lesson was with my paddle diving. I was instructed, over email actually, to make sure that my arm was sweeping past my ear. This was entirely different than where I percieved (under water) the correct motion to be. I spent quite some time on a cleared basement floor practicing and refining the paddle angle, the following pool session rewarded me with success. While I was still new to this, I practiced both sides to get an on and offside roll. These were fine until I had a bit of brain blockage on my offside roll later in the season. A little coaching got me back on track. Turned out that I was a bit sloppy in the setup. > What style do you often teach? The method generally used at these sessions is the Pawlata with a Greenland paddle, so I assume this is what I will be doing as well. I was unsuccessful with this paddle and got it with my feathered Euro. I have since been taught this and a few additional rolls with the Greenland. Do you use "Grace under Pressure" or some > other video? I havn't seen this one(though heard of it of course), but have the 'Performance Sea Kayaking' video. Facilities don't accomodate the viewing of a video before class. > > Just a few questions to get the conversation started.
