Hello Paddle Wisers, I will be at Hidden Falls Park in St. Paul Minnesota to represent our club the Twin Cities Sea Kayaking Association for the New Years Day paddle on the Mississippi River. I agree with Chuck when he says that a drysuit with fleece insulation underneath can make you feel warm while paddling on a Winter day. Additional heat comes from your sprayskirt trapping warm air in your cockpit. I can remember how quickly you can cool down after you pop off your skirt from the coaming. There are some paddlers who like wearing pogies so that they can feel their paddle shafts with their hands. It helps if your paddle is made of wood for your hands will warm up the wood. Fiberglass paddles will have an air pocket inside the shaft that can rob heat from your hands. Be sure to have some padding under your feet also for if you do not have enough insulation under them you can lose heat through your feet to the cold boat hull. A thermos of some warm juice can help also in case their is a capsize or to toast the new day. Our club will hit the river at 11:00am by sliding in or by the usual manner.
