Only been skimming the conversation about books so sorry if this is a bit
oblique!

It's old, and out of print, but it was a best seller in 1956... "Spring on
an Arctic Island" by Katharine Sherman. Set on Bylot Island in the Canadian
High Arctic. Bylot became a Preserve, partly as result of the interest
generated by this book over the years. It is an "old-style" narrative,
without all the personal torment and "angst" that passes for travel writing
has in the present decade.. She's a great writer, without being overly
sentimental. It's about an Inuit culture on Pond Inlet, (in it's 11th hour,
before snowmobiles and modern housing arrived, a culture still with only
one foot ( or paddle) in the 20th C.It's about sea-kayaking,hunting, the
rhythm of water, ice, wind, etc. It's about people, a strange land, and
adventure. Anfd few have written as well since.
