To follow up on the note by Rich Dempsey: The book, Kabloona, written
by a
Frenchman at the turn of the century re. time spent with the Inuit when
they
were still a stone age people. Little to do with kayaking as I recall
but
then I read it some time ago. Still it affected me deeply to imagine
these
people and their ways - an awesome read.

I also heartily recommend this book (the author is Gontran de Poncins,
and the events take place in 1939, not at the turn of the century). It
has nothing to do with kayaking, as I recall, but it is a fascinating
read, not just for its portrayal of Inuit society and mores, but for the
portrayal of the author's transition from being initially disgusted and
baffled by Inuit ways to almost thinking like them. I found the Inuit in
this book to be far more alien than most of the aliens in science
fiction.
