"LOVE AND WAR IN THE APENNINES" Eric Newby; When the
Italian Armistice was sign- ed in 1943, Eric Newby left the
prison camp in which he had been held for a year and made
his way through the forests and mountains south of the Po
River". (with permission)

Kayak-related, as he was a folbot-borne Brit commando
comically invading Italy. Despite the title, I don't think
anybody even gets killed in it. The love part is him meeting
his future bride. One of my favorite travel writers. Also "A
Short Walk in the Hindu Kush" (he was one of the first
'modern' Europeans there). Excellent, but kayakless. A dear,
sweet, self-effacing, funny guy.
