Something for the Aussies on this list:

>From the 23 of december I will be in Australia for 6 weeks. Visiting
family, and traveling around. I would like to put in a couple of
paddling days, but I won't be bringing any own stuff.

As Australia is to big to see in one vacation, I will not stray to far
from my landing spot Melbourne. Just Victoria, part of NSW, and
may be Tasmania (an old wish, but probably to much to do in the
limited amount of time)

Does anybody know some acceptable sea-kayak outfitters over
there? As I would like to introduce some non-paddling (not-yet-
paddling?) relatives to the sport, I am looking for outfitter not only
renting stuff but also doing elementary courses, or trips for
unexperienced paddlers. On the internet I found two companies:
one in Sydney harbour, the other in Jervis Bay (NSW south coast).

And of course, if any of you is interested in talking boats and
showing photographs over a beer, then just drop me a line. I would
love to.

Greetings,

Merijn

Here are some contacts in Melbourne to try:

Canoes Plus
140 Cotham Road, Kew
Phone: 9816 9411
Hire of Dagger plastic sea kayaks, comprehensive gear range.

Melbourne Sea Kayak Centre
36 Mountain View Rd, MT ELIZA
9775 2800
Hire of various boats, from Mt Eliza and off the beach at Sorrento

Outsports
Nepean Highway, MOORABBIN
Ph. 9532 5337
Hire of Pittarak and other sea kayaks, gear sale.

The Kayak Centre
Jetty Road, SANDRINGHAM
phone: 95933106
Hire of Arctic Raider, Southern Raider, Raider X and other boats, near the
water. I think instruction is available here. One of the operators has a
Dutch accent.

In southern NSW, try:
Gordon Carswell
Southern Cross Sea Kayaks
Bournda Road,
Wallagoot Lake
tele: 02 6494 1920, or 02 6495 6433
Hire of singles and doubles of Gordon's own design and manufacture, really
nice boats, and a great bloke to instruct. He converted my near death
drowning efforts into a serviceable roll in half an hour! He'll deliver and
pick up boats from put-in and take-out sites in the area.

Please feel free to email me direct, or ring me on (613) 03 9439 5254 to
organize a paddle. If I can't go myself, I should be able to find some of
the Victorian Sea Kayak Club members who might be around. The weather is
great over summer. Be prepared to use plenty of sunscreen!
Regards,
PT
