Alligators are not typically aggressive animals, unless they are accustomed 
to being fed by stupid humans *or* you surprise a mother with her babies.  
The first time I paddled through an alligator habitat here in the Lowcountry, 
it was a little spooky,  until I noticed that the telltale eyeballs and snout 
would submerge or retreat each time.  One time I happened upon a baby gator 
swimming alongside my kayak down the river; it was my fastest sprint ever!
