PaddleWisers...

I still remember my first trip to Montana to visit family a number of
years ago. We were going to paddle on the Stillwater and do some camping
and hiking. After hiking a ways I start picking up these beautiful, big
feathers ...lots of 'em ! Man, I'm tying them together and making
ornamental what-evers ...we all had ponytails back then, non ? Jim
finally sees what I'm up to and goes ballistic. "Throw all that away !
Eagle feathers you idiot ...jail time, BIG TIME ! ", he says.

What the heck did I know ? Bear bells and eagle feathers, I was way out
of my element !

This was not a winter camping trip but I got the coldest that I have ever
been in my life. This was a summer time trip ...July 4th to be exact
...but up above 9000 feet we got a 5 inch snow ! ...on July 4th !!
If I had not been there I would not have believed it. Jim kept telling
me as we packed earlier ...yeah, take that ...better pack that too
...you'll need another jacket.

I'm glad I listened to him or I would probably have been more than just
'cold". My cook stove wouldn't work, my small lantern wouldn't work, my
fingers wouldn't work ...my nose ran and my feet smelled ! ...midnight
head call ? ...Forget it ! I would have pee'd in Jim's boot before
going out of that tent.

All in all it was a GREAT trip and the Stillwater was anything but still
! Oh, yeah I never did get to try out a recipe that I kept proposing for
the duration of the trip ! The locals just sadly shook their heads
...We did cook up something I remember called "Shephards Pie". Had a big
spoonful of mashed potatoes on top of a veggie-meat mixture that all sat
on bannock bread, I think. Pretty good stuff, but my "Eagle Gumbo" would
have been better !

...adieu, mes amies ...Peyton (Louisiana)
