Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.." ;-) This was aptly placed in my email. I just finished reading a trip report from a fellow Kansas Canoe Association member. Saturday he and another (crazy) guy "paddled" down the Arkansas River. For the most part they just let the strong wind push them, using their rudders and paddles for occassional steering. I've been out on the Kansas river before in extremely strong winds. Just sort of hold your paddle horizontally and let the wind push on the blades. Nice so long as that almost 20 mph wind is going with the curent. I've also done it where the wind blew against the current for a two mile stretch. Combine a 4 mph current oppposing a 20+ mph wind and you get some nice waves. Fun but strenuous. I've also gone out on one of the many Kansas lakes in winds strong enough to impose a small craft advisory. While it was fun for my wife and I the people we were paddling with had a horrid time (my sincere apologies). To this day I'm irritated that the park ranger I talked to about where to put in stood next to my car looking at the kayaks and never mentioned the advisory. Didn't find out about it till the next day. They conveniently posted the advisory at the dam, 10 miles down lake from where we put in. #$%#%$!!! Mel --- There are three types of people, those who can count and those who can't. PS: They were crazy since the weather was horrible. All of 40 F with rain turning to snow combined with strong winds. And he paddled a SOT. To each their own... --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Share what you know.
