I think for most of her capsizes she was in the cabin (in the stern of
the boat).  So, capsizes resulted in bangs and bruises, but little risk
of drowning.  I would assume she was tethered somehow while rowing.

The boat has (if memory serves) 150 gallon seawater ballast tanks that
she filled at night and when storms were imminent, that helped make the
boat self-righting.  They were mostly dumped when rowing to decrease
weight.  She also made extensive use of a sea anchor at night and during
storms.  She called the big sea anchor "Papa Bear"!
