I just discovered that my round 8" VCP hatch cover has a major cracking
problem. The crack is only about 1'" long on the outside but runs about
3/4
of the way around the inside. It is right where the side joins the top.

This sounds abnormal to me, too. I have a couple of the same size VCP
hatch covers, but though after three years they are starting to show
superficial flex cracks on the outside, they are still flexible and have
no cracking or sign of UV damage on the inside. I once saw one on
another person's kayak, however, that was so old and brittle that it was
actually missing a large piece that had cracked out. I don't know why he
hadn't replaced it. A new one costs about $30.
