Alex et al, I guess the Chris who is circumnavigating NZ is the very Chris whose book "On Celtic Tides: One Man's Journey Around Ireland By Sea Kayak" has a warm review in the latest SK. After reading the review I made a mental note to search the book out. What a fantastic list of achievements: journeys around Britain, Ireland, the east coast of the US and Canada and now NZ. And a sensitive and honest writer; not just a 'been there, tick it off' kayaker. Perhaps Paul Caffyn will join him for part of the journey? Keep us posted on his progress. I will not make any derogatory comment on the rudder issue. If I did, and he gets into trouble, I would not feel happy about it. The electric pump is more Australian than NZ. Anyway, it is nearly mid-day on 25 December here, so merry Christmas to you all, and may your transition to the new millennium be smooth. I spoke to Chris just before he left for New Zealand. We had just had a huge low pressure system blow through. It was 40 to 50 knots out in the Strait half the week. Chris had been out every day, training out of "PA" Town. He said the Romany 18 handled beautifully - rudder free. He was tired of his old Nordkapp which "ran off" a wave in following seas, and was then difficult to put back on course. I don't think he will have any problems, other than the usual calculated risk we all face of sudden squalls coming up on a dangerous lee shore. Chris is THE MAN (but send positive "directional" energy his way nevertheless!). Anyway, I'll shut up and have Christmas now. Top of the season to all you PW'rs.
