Paddlewise:

Lately my legs have begun to itch quite badly when I'm in and out of
saltwater. It's a real pain. Once I shower, the itching is gone. Has
anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

Thanks, and a Happy New Year to all.

Josh (itchy in Ra`anana, Israel, and enjoying his first kayaking lessons in
68 degree water...)

Hi Josh,

Yup, I've had the same problem. If there is a shower nearby to the
take out, I take a quick shower. On multi-day trips where a shower is
not available, I have taken skin lotion and that helps. So do those
baby wipes (which are always handy as well as a luxury on multi-day
trips).

Cheers and Happy Y2K to you, too :-)

To Jackie, Joan, and Peter:

Thanks for the advice on saltwater itching. Wiping down with a bit of
freshwater and baby wipes seemed to do the trick pretty well...

BTW, my second kayak lesson went pretty well. Only tipped out twice, but
this was an excellent chance to practice rescues. We are being taught in
Romany 18s, without rudders, using feathered Lendal paddles. I'm still a
bit unsteady, but my wife is doing better than I. We also practiced
entering and exiting through some surf. Now THAT was fun!

Best,

Josh

Me too. What I do is carry a lot of water and I carry a kerchief in a ziploc
bag. When it is especially annoying I wet the kerchief and wipe my legs down.
I use a skirt so once I'm clean of the salt I'm usually ok until I get out
again. The zippy keeps the cloth free of more salt water and it really
doesn't take much water to dilute the salt enough for it to quit bothering me.
If you don't use a skirt or are on the Dead Sea, with its extraordinarily
high concentration of salt, you may find you need a great deal of water to
deal with the problem if it is getting to you while you are IN the boat. If
so, I'd suggest if you don't use a skirt, do so. You may find that the choice
is among, the heat of the skirt, the itchy salt in high salt environments, or
LOTS of water to rinse down with.

Good luck, happy new year and stay safe both on and off the water,
