If you head further south to Placida/Boca Grande with your rented kayak, you have some fantastic paddling. Check out Cayo Costa, the island just south of Gasparilla Island (Boca Grande) for camping. A recommendation by a list reader last spring to seek out Agua Azul Kayaks in Dunedin, n. of Tampa, turned out to be great advice. They showed us some great options in the area, and even held the boats overnight when our "innkeeper" was unwilling.
