Hi All,

My brother-in-law (non paddler) called from out of state and said he heard on
the news about a female lawyer paddled across the Atlantic.

I have no other info from him. Has anyone heard anything on that crossing?
I know of Tori Murden's amazing challenge in the Atlantic in a 23-foot row
boat battling two hurricanes. Good article in Boat/U.S. magazine (January
1999) about Tori's voyage. Just curious was it Tori or someone else?

Yes, it was Murden. She just landed on Guadeloupe after 81 days. She's the
first woman to cross the Atlantic paddling solo. You can read the NY times
article on it by going to
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/a/AP-Rowing-Quest.html

BTW, I knew Peter Bird who did the same in the early 70's. The rowboat he
paddled is on exhibit in the maritime museum at Fisherman's Wharf in San
Francisco. He next tried the Pacific leaving from Calif., and was rescued
when he was found in a hallucinatory state near Hawaii (state of mind not
state of the union). On his next attempt of the Pacific, he disappeared and
was never seen again. Very sad.

Does anyone know of a list of who has made successful crossings of the
Atlantic and Pacific rowing solo?

has rowed both the Pacific and the Atlantic
I've never heard of a list. Would be great to know if one exist.

I just happended to be southern Indiana this weekend about 40 miles from
Louisville where Tori Murden lives. The TV stations had extensive coverage of
her arrival in Guadaloupe. Expect to see her on the usual round of TV shows in
the next week.

The Louisville Courier Journal had several good articles about the trip, along
with a list of other people who have crossed the Atlantic solo. Tori is also an
accomplished mountain climber having climbed some mountains in Antartica. The
article also mentioned is did sea kayaking. Sounds like quite an interesting
and talented person.

If anyone locate the Courier Journal web site, let me know. I haven't the time
to look for it today.
