Offline i got a message that  includes this idea:

As Mr. Pascoe indicates in his article, many of the problems occur when a
"thick" core is subjected to curves and recurves.  This has the effect of
stretching the outer layer and compressing the inner.  This is not nearly
the same level of stressor in kayak construction which utilizes a much
"thinner" lay-up

i think that may have been the point that i was overlooking in understanding
how the article might apply to kayaks & canoes.
