Chuck Landis and I decided to bring in the new year with a short (5 mile) local paddle. We put in at a ramp on the Intra Coastal Waterway in Boca Raton and spent the next hour or so surrounded by 2 and 3 digit houses ($2.4M,$10.9M, etc), beautifully manicured lawns and trophy wives on 100 foot boats. The weather was perfect...74 degrees with water temps about the same and not a cloud in the sky. There was a light breeze around 10 knots. We paddled north a couple of miles to a small park with a canoe trail through the mangroves. We slipped in under the ropes (there to prevent rental canoes from entering the more dangerous ICW) and paddled along the trail for a short while. The receding tide had left less then a foot of water in the trail so we bid a hasty retreat. We shot past the put in on the outgoing tide and cruised around Lake Boca for a while then headed back to the ramp. Most of the distance paddled was a no wake zone so even the jet skis were quiet. It was a delightful first paddle of the millennium!
