>> Chuck... I guess you knew this question would be coming: what's the comparison between the Extreme Krill light and the Photon Micro-Lite, I'm not familiar with it. Robert >> The Krill Lamp is a tubular electroluminescent light powered by two AA cells. Though it is not very bright, its large surface area makes it very serviceable as a marker light. Basically, it is a replacement for a light stick. The brightest model, the Extreme green ($30), is about as bright as a fresh Cyalume light stick. Batteries last about 50 hours of continuous use. The Standard model ($25) is about as bright as a light stick that has been glowing an hour or more, and its batteries last about 120 hours. The best prices I have found (actually, that Dana Dickson found) for the Krill lamp are at Backcountry Equipment, http://www.backcountry-equipment.com/accessrs/a-hd_lmp/krill.html. The Photon Micro-Lite is an LED light about the size of a quarter. it normally comes attached to a keyring, but it is also possible to order one with a lanyard and clip. The original model operates only when the sides are squeezed, but it has a battery life of up to 124 to 200 hours. The newer, brighter, Micro-Lite II model has a tiny slide switch and a battery life of about 12 to 14 hours of continuous use, maybe twice as long with intermittent use. I have the Micro-Lite II model with the white light, and though it is nowhere near as bright as a Mini Mag, it is still bright enough for reading in a tent or finding your way down a trail at night. When my headlamp died after a night paddle on Lake Superior last summer, the Micro-Lite II proved an admirable backup light for setting up the tent. For more information, see http://www.photonlight.com/index2.html. The best price I found for the Micro-Lite II is about $18 at R.E.I.
