Perhaps you need to give NYC another look.  There is a very active paddling
group there full of really great people.  There is an NYC version of
Paddlewise that you might want to monitor to let you get a feel for the
place.  It's at nyckayaker_at_envirolink.org and you subscribe in the usual way.
