"How I overcame this was to switch to an extended paddle roll (Pawlata)"
Your post rings true with my limited experience. I now know that if I blow a
roll, holding the paddle in the extended position for the second try will get me
up in most conditions. However, in turbulent water like surf, the extended
paddle position gives more leverage for the water to work on, and snatch the
paddle away, causing a failed roll. I think this may be where a roll which uses
the blade under water, a "storm" roll, may be useful. So far, however, I can
only manage this in calm conditions.

I have found it useful to make sure the paddle is held in the best position of
readiness alongside the boat before re-entry. It wastes time and part of your
lung full of air to re-enter, then go grabbing the paddle and setting it up. On
the other hand, with the paddle set up ready, it is possible to have enough air
to get your spray skirt on underwater. When the roll is then completed, you are
up with no further water entering. Good in theory.... I have only been able to
do this in a pool so far, it has not been confirmed in "combat" conditions.
