I guess we've all done what we could the get the Rule pump to take up as
much as possible. I considered mounting it just in front of my seat,
between my legs, to place it as low as possible. Rejected that idea when I
realized I would probably kick it out of place the next time I jumped into
my kayak. I placed my wife's pump behind her seat and to one side. In
theory, this allows her to suck up the dregs by edging her boat to that side
when the pump begins to suck air. In practice, her boat has about as much
residue as mine, in which the pump is mounted at the midline on the front
bulkhead.

I have considered -- but not yet tried -- attaching a short length (1/2
inch?) of plastic pipe or hose to the base of the pump inside the strainer
basket, effectively lowering the base of the pump. Perhaps I'll get to that
this spring (can't even get my obligatory work done, but I'll probably get
to this first).

Meanwhile, I'm not really unhappy with the volume of water that is left by
the pump as is. After all, the pump is meant to restore stability, which it
does. The 3/4 inch or so of water that the pump can't remove doesn't seem
to be much of a problem for stability.
