Doug, Although I hadn't planned on writing this, there's been so much talk about this subject that I thought I throw my water proof 2 cents in too. I am a relative newcomer to kayaking. I have been paddling for almost 3 years now in Southern Calif. Although most of my paddling is in the Pacific, I usually opt for the safer alternatives, ie. I always check the marine forcast and local conditions before I leave the beach and I have my VHF monitor CH 22 (the CG repeats weather warnings on this channel periodically) as well as 16 and any channel our group is using. Your posts have not encouraged me to do things that are beyond my skill level--rather they have given me potential problems and solutions to think about. Please keep posting.
