What a treat it is to see and hear these wonderful creatures! They pass along the coast of California heading for the lagoons of Baja California. I spotted one about 1/ 2 mile west of the LaJolla Cove. I drifted along with my camera at the ready while a group of SOTs passed ( from SW Kayaks) . They were at least 200-250 yds west of me when the large gray whale surfaced twice, each time within 50-100 feet of me. I alone saw and heard her.She was big! The water remained disturbed for a long time after she submerged. I was fascinated and felt no fear; non-kayakers always ask: Aren't you afraid? No, I don't chase or threaten them in anyway. I just still in awe of their great size and beauty ( and try to bring back a few photos). I am going out next week-end to watch again.
