Fellow Paddlers,
I would like info. on recommended paddling spots in
Hawaii. I will be in Hawaii (the Big Island) in mid
feb. and it will be my first real big paddling trip
and dont want to miss a great spot while there. I
will be 40 miles south of Kona Int. Airport _at_ Keahole.
Any info would be greatly appreciated, since I live
in frigid NY and hope for a wonderful paddling
experience! I am partial to flatwater and calm days.
(I will get more adventurous someday) Thanks!

Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Bay are both great spots on the Big Island, and they are near where you will be staying. They are protected and usually calm, and offer safe launch spots with sandy beaches -- particularly important for me because I brought my Feathercraft, which could be shredded by the omnipresent lava. (At other locations, I had hair-raising experiences while surf landing through sometimes winding sand channels not much wider than my boat.) If you are not bringing your own boat, there are plenty of places nearby in Captain Cook that rent sit-on-tops. When I was there in October we saw plenty of dolphins, sea turtles, and reef fish. There is great snorkeling at both spots. At Honaunau Bay there are also the remains of an ancient Hawaiian village and sanctuary, which is now a National Monument. It makes for an interesting and relaxing after-paddle tour.
