I dislocated my shoulder yesterday during a rather vigorous high brace recovery on essentially flat water yesterday. It had gone out before about ten years ago on white water but had given me so very little trouble in the interim that I'd essentially forgotten about it. The maneuver that threw it out yesterday was one I've done many times before without trouble and I'm not sure what was different about yesterday. Fortunately I was paddling with two others folks and they were able to reduce it fairly quickly while we were still in our boats. I'm wondering if anyone out there can direct me to info re rehabilitation. It's quite disconcerting to have one's body fail so unexpectedly (and while hanging beneath one's boat at that). I hope to avoid surgery if possible and hunk up sufficiently to keep my shoulder where it belongs. As an ER doctor I've reduced a lot of shoulders but what happens to em after that is beyond me. Any advice? I also dislocated my left shoulder while white water kayaking back in 1995. I was in a canyon of a class IV river with no roads close enought to quit. None of my friends or the guide acceeded to reduce it. I had to finish the canyon in a raft wich took 3 hours and other three with the car to reach the hospital. Once there doctor ordered to wait for other 6 hours to safely apply me general anesthesia. The arm has been out of place for such a long time it would be impossible to reduce other way, without producing more injuries. He also said that we did the best, as none of us were doctors or trained to reduce it. Back in home I wanted to know how bad it was. I consulted many doctors, and all of them said if I manage to avoid other dislocation in the next 2 years, it wouldn´t probably get out again. So I hanged my kayaks high on the roof, turned my vcr on, and spent the next 2 years watching any video about kayaking I could get. Never happened again .......... Wish you a find a better way ! Canoe Magazine had a good article in the March (?) May (?) 1991 (?) issue called Dr Jobe's Shoulder Home Companion. It had a bunch of shoulder rehab/strengthening exercises. I have it at home pinned to the wall so I remember to do them. I'll try to get the exact reference.
