I know the fashion impact of the leisure suit would be diminished greatly
without the white shoes and matching belt, but it would be a great way to
do a "Paddle to a nice waterfront restaurant" kind of trip. Just take off
the rain jacket, and have a high fashion retro outfit for dining or dancing!

Or perhaps, a leisure suit clad team of kayak racers?

ACA dress code?? Only with matching accessories, I hope.

Speaking from memory, the old leisure suits didn't breathe worth a damn.
They were also clammy which I interpret as not breathing well. Perhaps it
was the exertion from busting all the moves on the dance floor (not).

Suggest getting out the Sierra Trading Post Catalog or visiting their web
site. At $8 - $10 per piece it is higher than the thrift shop, but it is
wicking polyester. (No affiliation or commercial interest)

On our New Year's Day paddle our Commodore was in a tuxedo complete
with bow tie and cummerbund. We had a champagne brunch at the lunch stop,
too.

Perhaps those wide lapels would provide sort of a wind foil and
increase their times.

I wonder how many gold chains it would take to invalidate USCG
approval.

I think you are on to something here. Unfortunately, I was too young to own
a leisure suit but I have been watching re-runs of KOJAK looking for some
fashion tips. From all the responses, it would seem that they are made of
"space age" materials (from the Apollo missions) and have some insulating
properties. They probably have limited ability to soak up smells like
neoprene so there's another advantage. You could walk into a restaurant with
all your paddling stink fashionably contained.
I have a huge concern about wearing shoes with the leisure suit though. They
would definately scuff the finish on a your boat. Worse, they would scuff
your friends during a rescue. A solution is to cut the leather soles off the
shoes (ie. remove the bottoms) and just wear the tops over your booties
(doh...I used the "B" word). Thats a trick I learned in military school
(dont ask...it built charachter). We had flip flops shielded by Bates
Floataways uppers. Do you know if Floataways are available in white?
