FYI:

Atlantic Kayak Tours will present a Kayak Skills Symposium on July 28 - 30,
2000, on the Hudson River at Peekskill, NY. The event will be open to just
100 participants, and promises to offer the highest quality instructional
program ever offered in the tri-state area. Ten coaches from the U.S. and
U.K. will offer more than seventy skill-building sessions during two and a
half days. Coaches include: Chris Duff, Doug Van Doren, Mike Devlin, Bill
Taylor, Nigel Dennis, Fiona Whitehead, Matt Berry, Rob Arrowsmith, Scott
Fairty, and Bill Lozano. A high coach-to-student ratio will maximize
individual attention for participants. Pre- and post-symposium courses will
provide additional opportunities to work intensely with these coaches.
The symposium's guiding principle is that skill development is a lifelong
pursuit. This is an event for serious paddlers who want to continue to
develop their skills. It is designed for paddlers with 2 Star to 5 Star
skills and for paddlers who want to develop their coaching skills.
Days at the symposium will be filled with fun and challenge, but the
evenings will also be eventful. On Friday and Saturday nights, two
extraordinary paddling adventures will be featured. The Friday presentation
will chronicle a month long expedition to Antarctica by Nigel Dennis
(designer of the Romany and Greenlander kayaks and premier paddler from
Wales, U.K.) and Stan Chladek (one-time Olympic paddler). On Saturday, Chris
Duff (who has paddled solo around the eastern third of the U.S., Great
Britain, and Ireland) will take us along on his circumnavigation of New
Zealand's south island, which is currently under way.

As for the usual disclaimer -- I don't work for these folks,
but I paddle with them regularly and have great respect for their commitment
to the great fun of good training. I'll be a volunteer at the symposium,
too.
