I was working on a similar solution when I ran out of experimentation time. I was experimenting with a flasher circuit to extend the life of the batteries. I was flashing the LED 100 times a second on a 50% cycle which appeared to give continuous light. It did extend the battery life but the IC consumed some of the savings.
