Paddlewisers, I think the number one problem that sea kayakers have with rolling is that they don't practice rolling enough. I have talked to people who say they can roll and plan to roll if they capsize, but the last time they rolled was in a rolling class or a year ago. That's not having a roll, at least not one to think that you can use. If you are going to roll, you are going to have to practice a lot, like every weekend for a month or so, until it is solid. Then you are going to have to practice about once a month to maintain it. By practice, I don't mean one or two rolls, but rather a few dozen. It's good to spend some time combat testing your roll in the surf too. And once that roll is good on one side, it is natural to progress to the next step and learn the off side roll too. Why not? You should spend time practicing anyway. A few more minutes practicing the off side roll isn't going to be too much trouble, and you never know when it may come in handy. I like having rolls on both sides so I don't have to bother with and waste time moving my paddle from one side to the other when setting up. Get wet!
