It has a rotating impeller with a permanent magnet in it and a pick up coil on the deck -- no wire between the impeller and the display. I'm told that one of the not-so-neat features of the surf version is that if you go under a bridge the display goes bonkers -- stray magnetic fields from electric power lines overwhelm the relatively tiny signal from the impeller.
