[Paddlewise] Doubles - Lean Turns

The following statement appears in the Sea Kayaker review of the Seaward
Passat double: "The kayak can be put on edge in order to perform a leaned
turn."

Who ever would do an edged turn in a double? But this makes me wonder what
are the important handling characteristics of a double, for which a rudder
is always used.

I remember crossing Rosario Strait, about a dozen years ago, in my
Feathercraft double (since sold), with my pregnant wife up front and my own
then limited skills. It was wind against tide with fairly large beam seas,
not breaking, and we were perfectly comfortable. I wonder how it would
have been in the Passat.
