Anyone out there had experience with Eddyline's Swift kayak paddles? What
do you think of them? They have now come out with a narrower blade, the
UltraSwift (4" width). These paddles are not discussed under Topics on the
PaddleWise web page.

will attempt to put into practice all the useful advice received after his
report on his THIRD kayak lesson...)

Swift paddles are great! We have 2 standard and 1 ultra, all in fiberglass.
I have wrist problems from working at a computer all day, and find that
using the UltraSwift unfeathered works best for me. We can paddle much
longer without tiring because the paddles are so light. Eddyline really
stands behind their product. We bought 4-part paddles so they are easier to
pack with our foldable kayak. My husband broke one of the shafts at a surf
clinic so we sent it to Eddyline for replacement. It took several months to
get it back, but we were not charged a dime. The paddles aren't cheap but
they are worth every penny.

Not familiar with the UltraSwift. I own two WindSwifts and one SeaSwift. The
latter has the most aggressive blade in the series, I believe, while the
WindSwift is a compromise blade with less surface area which is designed to
relieve windage when paddling unfeathered. My SO paddles the SeaSwift, and
loves it. I don't. It aggravates my wrist tendonitis, perhaps related to the
more vertical stroke required. When we paddle a double, I take the longer of
the WindSwifts to equalize our cadences. I like the paddle. All are light.

However, if you have access to them, you might consider one of the Lightning
paddles (see Mat Broze's excellent treatise on Lightning's paddles on the
Mariner Website: http://www.marinerkayaks.com/mkhtml/Padls98w.html). I have
used a one-piece unfeathered Standard Tour of theirs at 220 cm for over five
years, and it is better (for me) than the Eddyline paddles. Lightning's
replacement warrantee is reputed to be extremely good, and paddles are replaced
quickly, contrary to the experience of the Riccis with Eddyline when they broke
a shaft. Check the weights quoted on Matt's site for comparison with the
weights on the Swift paddles.

Usual disclaimers -- although I do sorta know Hank Hays from Lightning through
my brother.

Hello all,

I use both a Lightning ultralight fiberglass and a Swift
fiberglass/carbon paddle (no idea which one anymore). I like both of
them and swap which one I use. The Swift is a little more comfortable
due to the ribbed pattern on the paddle shaft (that is nearly
obscene). I purchased it from the discount bin at Rutabaga to use as
a backup, but ended up really liking it so use it as a primary quit
often. It is ugly as sin. My Lightning is also an odd baby blue
color. If only my little paddling ensemble matched.....

Also, who makes good reflective tape that one could use on paddle blades?

-Patrick

I have a Sea Swift paddle and I really like it. It's great for those times
when you need a powerful, albeit tiring stroke. I also like that it's very
light, and mine has way cool dolphin graphics on the blades, which must be
worth a couple of mph in speed right?
When I called the guys at the factory, they were very helpful and
knowledgeable- answered all my questions, and even recommended a slightly
shorter blade than my others (220 vice 230).
I can recommend the Swifts based on my experience with mine.
Good luck with that 4th lesson!
Kevin

Did not know Eddyline came out with the UltraSwift. Now I curious.
I do own the Sea, Mid and Wind Swift paddles. The Wind Swift paddle has
been my paddle for cruising for several years. Used the Mid Swift for a
spare. When I paddle hard with the Sea Swift it flutters but I've been told
it did not happen to other people. Great paddle if your playing in surf,
lotta surface area on the blade.
I used the Wind Swift for the Gulf Expedition exclusively and had the Mid
Swift as my back up.
And no, Eddyline did not sponsor me with the paddles. I paid full price
for both of the paddles long before the expedition (Wind Swift in 1992 six
years before the expedition).
I was sold on the durability, lightness and just the way they felt when I
was stroking. Just as the kayak I used no one can give me a paddle that I
was not pleased with, my health (and life) depended on the right gear. I do
not have any ties with Eddyline I just believe in their products.
I will also admit I enjoy paddling with the traditional paddles I built.
Guess like most paddlers always looking for the perfect kayak and paddle. I
am still buying and trying. Please don't tell my wife I'm still buying and
trying, this message will self destruct in ten seconds ( she may try to read
this PW stuff again). Whoa, here she comes, gotta go!!!
