I believe someone recently iquired about paddling in this
area, but I was not paying attention at the time. I will be
attending a technical conference in Monterery May 22-25 and
likely arriving the weekend before probably via SF, to save
on airfare and with luck kayak a bit that weekend. I have
two colleagues who may come with me who are experts at
"Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalictrant Compounds", but
rookies at kayaking. Since we will occaissionally be
discussing business this should all be tax deductable under
entertainment? or perhaps transportation costs? I have
advanced boating skills but if I kill my friends before they
get to present at the conference their companies will never
forgive me. Any suggestions for outfitters to rent boats
for us and beginner to intermediate level paddles in the
area that won't bore me, but will still keep my freinds out
of trouble? Also how is May for whale watching? I assume
we have a shot at seeing Gray Whales that time of year?

When I go to Monterey Bay, I always use Monterey Bay Kayak to rent from.
They are SUPER nice, committed to safety (they checked to ensure I had
skills and proper equipment before they'd rent me a boat) and they have a
great location right on the bay. It's about a 10-15 minute paddle from there
along cannery row to the Monterey Bay aquarium, through some awesome kelp
beds. Tons of Sea Otters, Sea Lions, etc. An otter jumped onto my boat while
I was rafted up in the kelp and shocked the heck out of me! He of course
knew exactly what he was doing, and when I didn't go over, left to find
somebody more fun to play with. (PS you aren't allowed to approach the
wildlife too closely, it's considered harassment-- but the opposite
certainly doesn't seem to bother the wildlife :)
Also if you're a diver, some of the best diving around is right there in
M.B. as well. Even better, I may be in Monterey for Safety School that same
time period. Maybe we'll bump into each other out on the water.
Regards,
Kevin

Here's a couple of url's re whalewatching in the Monterey CA area.

http://www.montereybaywhalewatch.com/winsprng.htm
http://www.graywhale.org/

Late May is beyond the usual gray whale migration here, but this year has
seen a highly unusual visitation of orcas in Monterey Bay. In any case as
someone else posted, being at the landward end of a vast underwater canyon,
that bay is a very productive aquatic habitat and you can see quite a lot
of sea mammals. The Monterey Aquarium is first-rate and well worth a visit
before you go out paddling. MBK is a very good kayak outfitter.
Also, if you haven't visited here, you might really enjoy driving the
(slow) scenic coastal Hiway 1 from SF down to Monterey. Just be sure the
driver keeps his eyes on the road, it's a long way down some of those
cliffs! I don't recommend it after dark.
	Enjoy
