Someone asked about ways to produce potable water from salt water. A Google search on "solar still" showed over 300 hits. Here are a couple commercial units, of many available, I suspect: http://www.solarsolns.com/still1.htm http://www.speedplastics.co.uk/solarstill.html Using "reverse osmosis", I got 11,200 Google hits -- undoubtedly a ton of commercial units, with one of the cheaper varieties at: http://www.marinedepot.com/index.htm (some searching needed) One of Kent Marine's units, with an add-on hand pump, may meet the needs of the Dempseys, although one wonders how it is possible to beat the PUR units.
