Back in the late 60ies I was apprentice at Siemens and quiet frequently had to
go to Berlin by train. Crossing GDR - customs etc late at night was a
challenge in itself. But when morning came - early morning ´round 5:00 - we
came through a region s.w. of Berlin with lots of lakes and the Havel. After a
bad night in a rumbling train that was a sight which, though I wasnt paddling
then, made my day: Water, lovely water in an otherwise "grey country".

When the border opened in 89 I still was not paddling frequently (as I did in
my fathers Klepper double in the early 60ies and as I do now. since I live
almost at the shore of Lake of Constance - a mere 700 meters to go), but I
took the time to go there by car, stroll around. Paddling there in 96, 97 -
and from there right into Berlin - was another thing, even better. I did it
and sure will do it again. It is amazing how much you can see in that city
from the water (and what you need not see, too).
