Jerry, I haven't done it yet, but I plan to put a lot of d-rings or glassed-in split pieces of small PVC pipe for lash points in the boat I'm building. I don't think the gear shifting is too bad on longer trips, but on a day trip with only 1 or 2 small bags of emergency stuff, the shifting is a bit annoying. Especially considering that I'm more likely to do hard leans, sculling, and roll practice on a short day trip.
