Fellow Sea Kayakers, Despite a forecast for rain, Joe Kramp, his old buddy visiting from Chicago, Vic Hurtowy, and I went for a coastal paddle out of Newport Harbor this Saturday morning. We headed south, and as we were about a mile off the village at Crystal Cove, we saw spouting from three whales about a mile away and just off Abalone Point. We weren't sure if they were heading north or south, but we sensed north, which was in our general direction. We quickly paddled in a direction that would allow us to intersect with them if they were heading north. After a lot of hard paddling, we still hadn't seen them, and we assumed they were heading south away from us. Just when we gave up on seeing them, we heard spouting behind us. We looked and saw the whales less than a hundred yards away. Staying to one side and behind them by a couple hundred yards to avoid disturbing them, we followed them two miles up the coast to the Newport Jetties. Many times we saw them surfacing for air and raising their tails. Two of them usually surfaced at the same time. It was quite spectacular. I think Vic visiting from Chicago gave us good luck.
