Allison - Your note to the group implies that maybe your landlords would let you drill holes in the ceiling, but not in the walls of the apartment. If so, that's a great way to store the boats. I have 3 sea kayaks hanging in my garage. Since it's **my** garage, I just drilled holes for about 10 cheap eye screw-ins (some of the screw eyes can be shared by two boats) from the local hardware store. It's very easy to raise and lower the boats using these. The lines are anchored to two screw eyes on one side of the boat, one at bow and the other at stern. A 3/8 or 1/2 inch line then goes under the boat between each of these pairs. The "free" end of the lines go up to the pair of screw eyes on the opposite side of the boat. The lines are tied to themselves, using simple overhand knots, 2-3 throws each tie. Obviously, this same arrangement could be used with hammocks. I can't use hammocks because the ceiling of the garage is pretty low, but otherwise they'd be a better way to store the boats.
