FWIW, I had the pleasure of paddling across Galveston Bay with Maligiaq and a Houston Canoe Club group last fall. It was a moderately windy day, and he was in a borrowed (eek, imagine this) plastic kayak. I am pleased to report to you he WAS wearing a pfd that day, and I am sure he must have been plenty warm too. AND it was a purple lifejacket. I have a photo to prove it!
