RE: [Paddlewise] Acadia National Park

If you paddle the Maine coast something to keep in mind is that these
islands are very fragile. There is very little topsoil so even minor
erosion is a big deal. Because of the lack of soil depth and the small size
of the islands one should remove all solid waste, cat holes are not an
acceptable method here.

I would also suggest that you build no fires. I love a nice roaring
campfire as well as the next guy and probably more than most, but these
islands can't take it. There is not enough fuel for fires. It broke my
heart in the 80's to watch island use increase and with that the use of open
fires. First what little driftwood and dead wood that was on the islands
would disappear, then standing deadwood would go, and finally people would
start hacking live trees. These fires also scarred the granite horribly.
In some cases fires were built up against large erratics and the heat often
caused these to split and crumble.

So please, have fun, be safe, and be kind to those Islands that I miss so
dearly.

Cheers,
