Jim, Welcome to San Diego. I have paddled out that channel many, many times. 90% of the time it is no problem. You can call (619) 221-8824 for a surf report which gives conditions in the channel. I have looked up at the bottom of a party fishing boat from a wave trough on a rough day. Usually it is calmer once you get past the channel entrance. It can be worse on a very low tide when waves can break half mile inside on the south side.
