FOLDING KAYAK DAY, SATURDAY, APRIL 29TH, 9:30 AM TO 2 PM DOWNTOWN BOATHOUSE NYC, LOWER MANHATTAN --Already have a folding kayak and want to learn more about using it and see the latest developments? --Are you a hardshell kayaker or new to the sport and want to know about boats that are great for travel and meet the needs of urban dwellers who lack storage space? If yes to these questions, then come to the Folding Kayak Day at the Downtown Boathouse on Saturday, April 29th from 9:30 AM to 2 PM. The event offers informative discussions in the morning followed by a chance for an on-the-water demo in the early afternoon. Participants are being asked to make a $10 contribution to the Downtown Boathouse to help further its efforts for public small boat access. I will be the principal speaker/catalyst and Randy Henriksen of the New York Kayak Company, which is co-sponsoring and coordinating the event, will share his extensive knowledge with us. Also I expect folding kayak enthusiasts will chip in with their experiences during the day. Details of the program: * Insights. We start with this overview at around 9:30 AM discussing this special breed of vessel that has been around for decades with a phenomenal track record of accomplishments. Even if you feel you know a lot of this already, I think you will gain some useful insights. * A Walkabout About The Boats. This will lead you on a discussion tour of a number of different models that will be on display pointing out features and nuances of each. Things like how they are constructed and why manufacturers differ in their approach to assembly, frame parts and materials. * Living With and Enjoying A Folding Kayak. This in-depth look will include assembly tips, preparing for air travel, stowing camping gear, practical modifications, useful and necessary accessories, off season storage, getting ready for the season, etc. This is bread and butter stuff that will help anyone who owns a folding kayak or is thinking of getting one. * On-Water Demos. A caution. Although it will be late April, our local waters are still dangerously cold then. Anyone who wants to demo a boat in the embayment will need to have his or her own cold-water protection garment. You may be able to switch off with some people who have such gear and some odd ends of cold water clothing may be around. But we cannot promise you anything will be available and so come prepared. You can use Boathouse PFDs and paddles. NY Kayak Company staff will supervise and act as safety support for the demos, which will end at around 2:00 PM. Directions to the Boathouse and information on what it is doing for the community are at www.downtownboathouse.org. Most parking rules for nearby streets are eased on Saturdays, but do look carefully at the signs. hope to see you there, ralph diaz -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . .
