It's actually very easy to cut down a 2 piece. Most manufacturers will sell
you a kit for +- $20.

Chuck, sorry to have misspelled your last name in an earlier post.

I heard the same advice and have used silicone religiously every time
the
ferrule starts to get too sticky. I bought a can, used it once to treat all
five paddles, then lost the can. Two years later, I'm still too cheap to buy

a new can, I know I'll find it someday. The paddles have worked without a
hitch for two years with that one application.

I spoke with the Werner factory the other day. I have two paddles that I

bought early in my education that are too long for me. I tried to sell them
but couldn't bear to sell brand new Werner paddles at a loss of $50 per
paddle. The factory said they can cut them down for less than $40 per
paddle,
and incredible deal if you like me bought a great, but too long, paddle from

a less than knowledgeable sales person. I knew they made great paddles but
I
was surprised at how reasonable their service work is priced.

A happy Werner paddle owner

It's okay. I'm so used to it that I always spell my name out loud for
people. The funny thing is that is spelled phonetically. Maybe it's the same
mental block that makes news anchors pronounce Chinese names as if they were
French (it's "Bei-jing," not "Bei-zhing," and "Hua-guo-feng," not
"Wa-guo-feng," with the "b" and "g" an unaspirated "p" and "k").

Hi Bob and All,

Werner will not sell ferrule kits. The reason is that many people are not
capable or willing to do a good job and the result is paddles that bear the
Werner name but don't reflect their standards of quality.

I should mention that I am not a Werner employee but that I do know them
pretty well and I am working on a new website for them at this moment. You
can look forward to a whole new look for Werner on the web in a couple of
weeks.

Cheers,

Ask them to send you a new insert and you're in business. They charged me
$12 for one when I cut down a paddle. cu

<<It's actually very easy to cut down a 2 piece. Most manufacturers will sell you a kit for +- $20.>>

I have a Viking paddle made locally by a fellow who is really a ww paddle maker but wanted to get into touring paddles so he was putting demo paddles into people's hands just to get them seen. When I picked up my paddle from him he had made it feathered. As I usually paddle Greenland the feathered paddle was too much and so I watched as he cut it appart for a take appart and then drill a hole and insert the gizmos that hold the pieces together. It looked easy to glue in the sleeve and insert the clip piece at the right place.

I've never tried it but I don't think it would be very hard.

Bingo! A 10 minute operation with fast setting epoxy! But if you own a
Werner it's wrap it up, take it to UPS, pay $15 or $20 to ship it, wait a
week or two ,pay them $40(including shipping?) and hope it arrives
undamaged. Seems crazy to me!

So far both paddle manufacturers were more then happy to supply me with the
sleeve. The Lendal kit came with an extra SS button thingy.

I don't mean to come down on Rob but clearly he required the parts and they
refused to supply them. I would not have accepted their lame rational, and
certainly would not have defended it.

Hey Bob and All,

Don't worry Bob, I'm pretty thick skinned and reasonably capable of
defending myself, you'll have to work fairly hard to offend me. I don't
feel picked on at all. I do want to clarify something though; I have never
needed a ferrule kit from Werner, I used to sell their paddles at a shop I
worked for. That is how I'm aware of the policy. As for defending it, I
don't think I'm defending it, I'm just offering the explanation that was
offered to me. As with most manufacturers issues, my suggestion would be to
call Werner and get your information straight from the horses mouth.
